Positional rankings for the 2022 NYJ

Positional rankings for the 2022 NYJ

By Steamboatsam

I'm bored at work today so I decided to go ahead and do a write up going over positional groups for the Jets and attempt to rank them. This roster is finally in an exciting place so I'm going to talk about it as much as possible before week 1 just in case everyone's expectations fall short (typical jets fashion). These rankings are based largely on past production with some personal bias mixed in. That being said, I'm going to remain optimistic and let's get started.

Everyone likes offense more so lets start there:

  1. RB- Breece Hall(rookie), Michael Carter, Ty Johnson, Tevin Coleman, La’Michael Perine, Zonovan McKnight (UDFA)- This group has depth, explosion, and versatility. With the 1-2 punch of Hall and Carter they will be a dynamic duo with ground and pound ability while adding that extra pass catching element out of the backfield. LaFleurs scheme is very RB friendly and we should see great production from this group. Look for Perine and possibly Johnson to be cut in training camp or earlier.

  1. TE- CJ Uzomah, Tyler Conklin, Jeremy Ruckert (rookie), Kenny Yeboah, Trevon Wesco, Lawrence Cager- After years of abysmal TE play it looks like Jets nation finally has a solid room. Each of these guys brings something different to the table so versatility is a major component of what's going on here. CJ will be that true inline TE while Conklin can be a 3rd down/redzone guy. Ruckert is a developmental guy who this staff is really high on. Future TE1? Yeboah and Cager are both depth guys who can see time in a few years if they can step it up (this is Cager’s first season at TE after switching from WR). Wesco was drafted to be a phenomenal blocker who has underperformed. He got snaps at FB last year but with Nick Bawden coming back it seems that role is filled. Look for Wesco to get cut.

  1. OL- George Fant, Laken Tomlinson, Connor McGovern, Alijah Vera-Tucker, Mekhi Becton, Chuma Edoga, Dan Feeney, Max Mitchell (rookie), Nate Herbig, Connor McDermott- I am a big fan of the starting 5 this team’s got. I think across the board, if everyone is healthy, this could be a top 5-10 unit in the league. The main reason I don't have these guys ranked higher comes down to depth. If any of the starters go down, aside from Feeney, I don't think there are any quality backups. There's some young talent in this group but as I said in my last write up, if Mitchell, Edoga, or McDermott are seeing any type of significant time this line becomes questionable. Let’s hope these hogs can stay on the field and move some bodies around.

  1. WR- Corey Davis, Elijah Moore, Garrett Wilson (rookie), Braxton Berrios, Denzel Mims, Jeff Smith, Tariq Black, Rodney Adams, Irvin Charles (UDFA)- Vastly improved from last year but there are still some questions. If everyone plays to their potential this receiving corps could be something fun to watch. Corey Davis battled some injuries but he's proven himself in the past. Elijah Moore has immense potential and we've seen flashes but the consistency needs to be there in year 2 as well as staying healthy. Garrett
Wilson is a promising young prospect but how much can you really rely on/expect from a rookie receiver. Berrios will have a role on special teams and gadget plays but he appears to be more of a backup SLWR. I'm out on Mims at this point. I think he's a bust but I won't be upset if he proves me wrong. I just wonder if he'll even have an opportunity to. The rest of these guys are practice players and depth but there have been reports of Irvin Charles really impressing the staff at rookie minicamp. Potential under the radar pickup if he can make this roster and develop.

  1. QB- Zach Wilson, Mike White, Joe Flacco- Having your QB ranked last in an offensive ranking is somewhat horrifying. But after Zach’s rookie year and a 4-13 record, can you blame me? I believe year 2 will be a huge jump for the kid but until he shows us results on Sunday it's hard to give any credit to a group who combined for 20 TD’s/ 20 INT’s/ and averaged just over 200 passing yards a game. Mike White seemed to have proven himself a solid backup and I like the veteran experience of Flacco. Time for the mormon missile to take off.

Now that we've gotten the fun side of the football out the way, I guess we can dive into some defense.

  1. CB- Sauce Gardner (rookie), DJ Reed, Bryce Hall, MC2 (NB), Brandon Echols, Isaiah Dunn, Javelin Guidry, Justin Hardee- To quote Michael Scott “oh how the turntables”. A few months ago this was the weakest position on the team but after FA and the draft JD has turned this group around. After his performance last season having Bryce Hall as CB4 seems almost surreal. I’m a big fan of his and really liked his play but this is the NFL and the best players get on the field. That being said, having a backup with alot of experience could pay off down the road. Echols and Dunn seem to be the other primary backups. Hardee, although a team captain and outstanding special teamer, could be cut in training camp to free up cap. I personally want him around to be a locker room guy and on field special teams coach. All in all this is going to be another exciting group to watch develop over the next few years.

  1. DL- Carl Lawson, Quinnen Williams, JFM, Sheldon Rankins, Jermaine Johnson (rookie), Bryce Huff, Jonathan Marshall, Solomon Thomas, Jabari Zuniga, Michael Clemons (rookie), Vinny Curry, Nathan Shepherd, Jacob Martin - Although this group lacks a true run stuffer i believe it is versatile and lethal. With Lawsn coming back and the addition of JJ this d-line should be able to get after the QB and control the run. Saleh has been vocal about how important the line is in his scheme as well as how he likes to use them. He's a big believer that dline can n0ot go 100% on every play for a whole game. That means there is going to be a rotation. Q, Lawson, and JFM I'm guessing will have the top 3 snap count out of this group. JJ will come in on pass situations and may be  able to work into a more “starting” type of rotation as the season goes on. Rankins, Martin, Huff, Thomas, and maybe Curry i see as the “rotational guys”. These will be the players who come in for a few snaps here and there to give the main guys a breather. Clemons could be a wildcard as he's gaining a lot of post draft hype. Zuniga is another potential cut candidate after failing to really improve.

  1. LB- CJ Mosely, Quincy Williams, Hamsah Nasrildeen,Jamien Sherwood, Del’Shawn Phillips, Marcell Harris- I’m not that high on this group but it sure seems like the staff is. CJ is a solid backer who's a proven leader and player. Only problem is his best days are behind. Quincy was a great waiver wire pickup but I think people overhype his play. He makes the big hit and everyone freaks out. John B from Gang Green Nation put it well, at LB it's always obvious when someone makes a good play, but not as obvious when they fill the wrong gap. It's easy to disguise bad LB play to the casual viewer. I’m not really hating on Quincy because I do like the fire he brings. He just needs to clean up his play and work on his reads. The rest of these guys, in theory, should only see some rotational snaps and provide depth. Can Sherwood and Nasirildeen develop into a long term duo?

  1. S- Jordan Whitehead, Lamarcus Joyner, Ashtyn Davis, Jason Pinnock, Elijah Riley, Will Parks- Whitehead was a good signing in my opinion but he's the only real lock to start. Joyner has a history of playing FS but he is 31, fresh off a full season of injury, and hasn't played safety in years (teams had him at NB). This group scares me because it is not deep. One injury and Ashtyn Davis or Elijah Riley are starting again. Riley I cut some slack because he was a practice squad player who elevated his game. He's still no NFL starter. Davis I'm done with. He and Mims are in similar situations in my eyes, nut up or shut up. If Davis can put it together I’ll be hyped but if he continues to take bad angles and miss tackles, he could be cut by this time next year. Hopefully the CB’s can take some pressure off these guys and they won't be asked to do too much.

Combined team positional rankings with 1 word description (positive vibes only) of the group:

  1. RB (dynamic)

  2. CB (young)

  3. DL (depth)

  4. TE (reliable)

  5. OL (versatile)

  6. WR (playmakers)

  7. QB (potential)

  8. LB (quick)

  9. S ( tough)

Darnold v. Wilson

Darnold v. Wilson by Mid-Sized Mike Although my company usually does not get a great return on investment from my employment on your average Wednesday, today is particularly bad. My manager just pushed my 1x1 out 30 minutes, so what better a time to compare the situations given to my two most recent sources of hope and optimism: Sam Darnold and Zach Wilson. Even though I already know just how drastic the difference is between the state of the Jets now and what it was only a few years ago, I think it’ll be funnier when written out. Let’s get into it.   Sam Darnold era: Just a few years ago, there was a massive disconnect between the Jets ownership, general manager, and head coach. Woody Johnson was in the middle of his term serving as ambassador to the UK, and even though he seemed like a really good guy, Christopher Johnson running the show continued to be a disaster. Mike Macagnan made some moves that I Iiked in the short term, but they all were extremely desperate, random, and th...

NY Jets Draft Report 2022

Jets draft report 2022: By Steamboatsam After an electric round 1, productive day 2, and relatively quiet day 3, the 2022 NFL draft came to an early, but enticing end for the New York Jets. I’ll get into player specific thoughts later but overall as a fan I'm feeling hopeful, optimistic, and excited to see what is happening in Florham Park. Now that the majority of free agency and the draft have come to an end it's clear what the Jets mission this off-season was. Improve the defense and add weapons for their young franchise QB. Both of these goals seem to have clearly been addressed, but it's not over yet. The young talent this roster is filled with now must be coached up and begin to show improvement. I love how this year's picks are, for the most part, proven players with a resume and stats. In the past we've seen players be drafted for their “physical traits” and “immense potential”. While the prospects who were brought in over the last few days possess both of...
